Well it' wasn't the most perfect vacation I can imagine. Ihor and I both got sick consecutively, leaving exactly one day in between when both of us were feeling reasonably well. Fortunately this day happened to be the day we decided to do Maui's famous "Drive to Hana." Don't even think of going there without doing this trip. Especially if you're a waterfall nut like me. So of course I had to dive in. I kept my underwear on this time, which goes against the pure spirit of waterfall swimming, but there were quite a few other people on the trail, so I decided not to embarrass Ihor,
who lacks the nude beach gene. Quite exhilarating!
And a bit farther up the trail we experienced the amazing and spooky bamboo forest, to which this picture does not do justice. The bamboo is dense and
thick and bright green and makes strange creaking noises as you go through it. Spooky in a good way.The rest of the trip was actually pretty cool -- we stayed with wonderful people in Kauai and Maui, and got treated to insider secrets of what to do and where to go. It was just hard being sick. We did a lot of just sitting in the sun and reading, which, as my buddy Sandy pointed out, is what most people do on their Hawaiian vacation. We, on the other hand, were tricked out for serious hiking and adventure so it seemed a bit subdued.
Another dubious accomplishment is that I took a substantial three-week break from knitting, which I was beginning to wonder if I could do even if I wanted to. I had a bit of withdrawal for a couple of days, but then it actually seemed fine. So I guess I'm not that obsessed. Now that I'm back I'm trying to finish up a bunch of projects to make way for a Gilmore loom that I'll be keeping for a friend, whilst figuring out whether weaving is actually going to be a craft I love. Like many things, you have to really get past the novice stage to know what works or doesn't work for you. At least this loom will be much more functional than the current no-name model I have been struggling with.
